What Causes a Pipe to Burst?

While pipes are most likely to burst in the winter, this type of disaster can occur at any time of the year, due to:

Freezing Temperatures

Water molecules expand when they freeze, and water freezes at a temperature of 32 degrees Fahrenheit. During extremely cold weather, ensure that the temperature inside your home or commercial space remains above 55 degrees, because once that number starts to drop, there is an increased risk that the water contained inside pipes located in outside walls or uninsulated spaces will freeze. Because the resulting ice has a higher volume than the liquid, it places pressure on the interior wall of the pipe, causing it to burst.

Aging Materials

Old pipes may lose their structural integrity as the result of corrosion or rust. Once the walls of a pipe become weak and unstable, or there is a sufficient buildup of rust or deposits on the interior, the pipe may develop a slow leak that worsens over time or bursts due to the increased pressure.

Clogs

A significant increase in pressure within the pipes due to a clogged pump or toilet may cause them to rupture and burst. While this occurs most often in buildings that lack routine maintenance, it is a good reminder to deal with clogs swiftly to prevent flooding and damage.
